BMC's grand plan Rs.4 Crore down South Bombay's drains

About BMC grand plan Rs.4 Crore down South Bombay's drains
http://www.mumbaimirror.com/article/15/201212152012121505543317190022309/Fume-no-more-SoBo%E2%80%99s-drains-to-smell-of-roses.html

Dear Chaitanya Marpakwar Ji,

Green Greetings

I was delighted to read about the efforts of the M.C.G.M. , to make an effort to use technology to address odour issues in "South Bombay's"  storm water drains.
Could I take the opportunity created to offer some suggestions which may be very useful ?

Please read about some of my work conducted with support and encouragement of the M.C.G.M. on their premises, the Municipal Versova Sewage Pumping Station, Andheri (West), Mumbai 400053, Maharashtra, India.

The third row, third picture ( from left ) is Shri Markandeya, former Chief Engineer SWM who visited the project and encouraged me.

http://www.greencrosssociety.com/news/an_experiment_to_clear_the_stink.html

Suggestions:

Since there is a large part of Mumbai's housing which drains their sewage through storm water drains ( albeit illegal ) , the matter needs to be Eco technologically addressed.

Using incredibly fast 'TURBO ECOLOGY', it now becomes possible to address the inorganic chemicals which are the real hazard in the sewage.

Just as we add an extra programme in our laptop to make it run more smoothly, 'TURBO ECOLOGY' can be easily installed along with any other system or process.  It becomes an 'ON LINE TREATMENT' process.

The mosquito issue can also be addressed and use of pesticide avoided entirely.

Separately, addressing odour by destroying the 'FOOD'  ( C/N ratio ) in the sewage while leaving the INORGANIC content untouched will lead to invisible hazard which gives no warning signals.

Turning off the alarm bell without addressing the root cause of the ecological fire was what current sewage treatment practices were about till recently.

Such processes also needlessly used electric power and machinery.

NASHIK MUNICIPAL CORPORATION had demonstrated this some years ago, even won an award from the Urban Development Ministry of the Government of India, from the hands of Shri Jaipal Reddy.

Odour issues can be better understood at this link http://www.greencrosssociety.com/odorless_toilet_presentation.htm

This knowledge and expertise is also available with the Municipal Corporation engineers also.

Ecological regards,

Shantharam Umanath Shenai

Fume no more: SoBo’s drains to smell of roses

10,000 litres of deo down the drain; BMC’s nod to Oscar Wilde: ‘We’re all in the gutter but some of us are looking at the stars’

Chaitanya.Marpakwar @timesgroup.com

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has found a solution to the city’s stench problem and, believe it or not, the grand plan involves pouring 10,000 litres of deodorant worth Rs 4 crore down Mumbai’s clogged drains.

The BMC’s Storm Water Drains (SWD) department has floated tenders to bulk buy a herbal chemical branded ‘greenoxy’, which works both as a disinfectant and a deodorant.

The pilot project, for which the civic body has set aside Rs 5-7 lakh, involves spraying the nullahs around Malabar Hill – arguably a part of the
city that least needs it. If the project is successful in South Mumbai’s D Ward, the BMC will try and get the total budget sanctioned in order to tackle more challenging neighborhoods further north.

The chemical works only on narrow drains, officials admitted, so travelling across Mahim Creek will continue to be a nightmare.

“When poured into the drains, the chemical reacts with the sludge and separates the silt from the water. The silt settles at the bottom of the drains, allowing the drain water to flow
smoothly,” LS Vhatkar, Chief Engineer (SWD), told Mumbai Mirror.w
“It also acts as a deodorant and after its use there is no stench or odour of any kind. Since it’s a herbal product and is eco-friendly, it won’t have any adverse effects when the drains empty out into the Arabian sea.”

The BMC, ironically, chanced upon this idea three months ago, thanks to a problem that closely affected the SWD department. Their office in Dadar stands right next to a small, artificial pond created to collect water overflowing from the pumping station that stands in its centre. After the monsoons, officials said, the smell was unbearable, and those close to the windows of the five-storey building were forced to abandon their desks for a week.

One of the staff members had heard about the herbal deodorant, which worked wonders for them (as an SWD official put it, the previously sludgy pond now smelled like ‘agarbattis’, or incence sticks). After this, a suggestion was made asking the BMC to consider using it in other problem areas – like the rest of the city.

“At that time, there were a lot of complaints from the Malabar Hill area about the stench emanating from the drains. We found that there was a problem, as storm water drains and sewage drains had gotten connected. That’s why we have planned the pilot project here,” a BMC official said.

The project – expected to be rolled out next week – will see the civic body’s conservancy workers use the chemical everytime they clean
the drains.

Indrani Malkani, the ALM coordinator for Dward, said treating the drains was a step in the right direction. “But the odour emanating from the storm water drains was caused by the illegal sewage lines, which have been connected by certain housing societies. The BMC should take action against them as well,” Malkani said.

After which they can try and solve the Mahim Creek problem.

The BMC will use a herbal chemical branded ‘greenoxy’, which costs Rs 400 a litre, to freshen up south Mumbai’s drains

The civic body’s conservancy workers will use the chemical every time they clean the drains

Yoga for Respiratory Disorder

Simha Garaja
The Roaring Lion, is a great technique to bring emotional balance, and it also heals the lungs and respiratory system. It also harmonizes the Thyroid gland. Emotions trapped within the anahat chakra are released when Simha Graja is performed. Emotions and stress are the main cause for respiratory disorders. These may be due to the persons current life situation or even emotions and desires from their past lives. Performing this over a period of time results in the release of the emotions past and present. It also makes the person more expressive and confident. It also calms the nerves and relaxes the body and mind.

Naadi Shodan / Anulom- Vilom
This is a pranayama to balance the Ida and Pingala Naadis. The Lunar and Solar energies/currents of our body. It brings a balance and health the the left and right hemispheres of the brain, the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, it heals the lungs and improves the body's capacity to breathe and optimizes the lungs ability to enrich the body with oxygen. Leads to balance of all solar and lunar activities of the body and mind, eventually opening the passage for Sushumna Nadi.

Bhramari
The buzzing bee is an instant stress buster. It calms and stills the mind, body, emotion and spirit. It opens the doorway to tranquility and calm. It is a great practice for heart patients as well. It is also a great technique for insomnia especially if performed before sleep. It also enriches the pineal gland and balances Pirtuatary function in the body. Spiritually, if perfected, it can lead you to Shunya and the realization of the Naad or the cosmic sound/vibration. It takes one to higher state of one's consciousness.

Yoga Stats for USA

Swami Satyananda Saraswati

Now, as the sun was ascending in the sky, suddenly the disciple was found. But her conduct has changed, her name, her dress, all h
ad changed. Her company had changed and her attitude, behavior and personality had changed. The guru recognized her, but what could he say to his disciple? This world was so foreign to his nature and was outside the realm of the guru.

The disciple didn’t recognized the guru because her path was different, her loyalty altered, her mode of conduct changed and also her preoccupation was different. The guru sang praises of the supreme reality; the disciple moved away. The guru raised the voice of truth; the disciple turned away. But at last she remembered something and had a glimpse of that path; it came and went like a dream. Who knows who will tell her, or whether the disciple will ever understand it or not?

This path is the world (samsara); the other path is the sara (essence). That path is imperishable. In order to revert to the path of truth from the untruth, one has to return—even from a very long distance—from the path of untruth.

The disciple becomes tired. In spite of the strong desire to walk the way of truth she sits down again and again. I tell her, sit when you like and also walk when you like but do not be frustrated. I also say, whether is this path or the other, you’ll have to walk and you’ll become fatigued. On this path there is darkness ahead and you’ll be robbed. On the other path there is light; the way is protected, there are supports and resorts. A short distance is enough. Walk then sit, but do not be defeated. I am with you.

The disciple is afraid of returning for fear of animals on the way. The guru says, “Do not fear, they are my friends. If you stay with me they won’t touch you. The roaring ones will roar, the laughing ones will laugh, and the flying ones will fly; you will hear everything and see everything, but while I’m here, nothing will touch you.”

This dialogue goes on between the two. Both are walking on this path. Let’s see how far they reach. _________

Gayatri Mantra: Meaning and Significance

*Om bhur bhuvah swah*
*Tat savitur varenyam*
*Bhargo devasya dheemahi*
*Dhiyo yo nah prachodayat*
Gayatri mantra has been bestowed the greatest importance in Vedic dharma. This mantra has also been termed as Savitri and Ved-Mata, the mother of the Vedas. The literal meaning of the mantra is:
O God! You are Omnipresent, Omnipotent and Almighty. You are all Light.
You are all Knowledge and Bliss. You are Destroyer of fear, You are Creator of this Universe, You are the Greatest of all. We bow and meditate uponyYour light. You guide our intellect in the right direction.
The mantra, however, has a great scientific importance too, which somehow got lost in the literary tradition. The modern astrophysics and astronomy tell us that our Galaxy called MilkyWay or Akash-Ganga contains approximately 100,000 million of stars. Each star is like our sun having its own planet system. We know that the moon moves round the earth and the earth moves round the sun along with the moon. All planets move around the sun.

Shri Hanuman Chalisa

In spiritual traditions across the world, often a hymn, poem, haiku(s), songs, prayers etc. created by awakened or enlightened souls or masters serve as text, mantra, shlokas or scriptures that are being used till date for healing. Healing not just of the body or mind. But the healing of one's life and ones whole self: body, mind, spirit.  While there is an intellectual meaning to the text, it is not of much consequence, except to the intellectual mind. And focusing on its intellectual or literery or literal meaning would be loosing the point all together. What is required, is to be pure hearted or devotional or trying to be of  empty mind. Just reading this text is like unraveling a spell that leads to a chain reaction of events and healing for oneself and one's loved ones. If you cant read, just listen to the audio. Sing along. Be free and creative. Sing it, read it rap it, what ever works for you.  Though these may fall under some religious traditions, it is important to understand that religion is derived from spirituality by society. One such text or hymn, created by Tulsi Das, a poet & saint from India is the "Hanuman Chalisa".  It is supremely effective especially for clearance of obstacles that manifest in our lives.

To best experience it, try to approach it with a state of no mind and humility.

5-10 minute Yoga for Stress Management

Stress is the number one cause for ailments caused in modern urban life. The very hectic pace of life, lack of sleep, job stress and a million other things contribute to a deteriorating human body and mind. There is no time for one to even look after oneself. Most People spend their time either at work, travelling to and fro from work, leaving little time and space for family and recreation. According to ancient Indian scriptures, if one's family life is happy, then life itself takes shape for positive things. If you are stressed from work, it invariably leads to harm to not only your body and mind, but also to your family, as they are the ones who most often bare the brunt of suppressed frustrations on the outside world. Plus, it is now proven scientifically that any sort of mental stress, invariably manifests in the form of physical or mental disease.

Yoga deletes stress from its very roots, where is exists on the deeper and subtler levels of consciousness, most often without us even realizing that its happening. So, if you can find a good way to deal with stress, you will solve alot of problems in your life. Just a workout is not enough. It only fatigues the body, and gives an illusion of relaxation. One has to target the source. It's not like if you will do yoga, you won't get stress. Stress is an integral part of life, and it exists for everyone. What makes a difference, is how you deal with it. And yoga will definitely help with that. So here it is. A simple practice that can be done by all. Do not underestimate is potency due to its simple nature. Those who stick to it, will realize its power and potency.

THE PRACTICE
Perform Every Day or Every work day as prescribed below, morning and evening.
It is divided into two halves, Morning and Evening. KEEP PHONE ON OFF OR SILENT. For this short period, you must not get up, unless there is a life and death situation or impending emergency. Ask you loved ones, room mates etc. not to disturb you in this period.

Morning:
Om Chanting (5mins): Benifits: Calmness, Peace, Focus. Chanting Om secretes Alpha waves in the brain, causing relaxation and rejuvenation. It is also my observation that whenever i chant at the start of the day, some how my day is better, smoother and has less of obstacles

How to perform
Sit comfortably and chant Om for 5 minutes with eyes closed, remaining still and awareness on sound or on the eyebrow center This is known as Practice of Japa. More details on how to perform Japa: http://informationbaba.blogspot.in/2012/09/mantra-yoga-practice-of-japa.html

Evening: This should be ideally done as soon as one returns from work. It will neutralize most of the days stress.
1) Shavasana: 5-10 mintues
Benifits:
Full body relaxation. Rejuvenation, revitalization of physical, mental, emotional and energy bodies. Enormously beneficial for the spine, especially those with lower back problems.

How to perform: Lie down on the floor, using a yoga mat/cloth/mattress etc. Spine in one line. Feet and hands comfortably parted. Palms facing upwards and the body loose and relaxed. Close your eyes for the whole duration and remain perfectly still. The word "Shavasana", is derived from the sanskrit word "Shava" which means Dead Body or Corpse, so you have to remain still like one.
Free online Guided meditation you can use:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_iUvaL4xFU&feature=share&list=PL9dWrzD2rbTaMRyuguH91K6kCXJhkaj2b

You may put on some calming music if you want OR just observe the breath. Don't worry about the wandering mind. each time you realize its wandering, just come back to what you or doing or just return to your breath.

2) Om Chanting (5mins)
(same as above)

Mantra Yoga: The Practice of Japa

Mantra is a sound or frequency of sound that works at deeper level, leading to expansion or liberation of the the mind. A mantra can be said out verbally or repeated in the mind. It works on the subtle level, stilling the mind, freeing in from thought constructs, leading to calmness, peace, tranquility and healing. Not just any sound is a mantra. But a sound heard or realized by a sage/rishi/master/awakened or evolved soul is a mantra. The practice of constant repetition of a mantra is known as Japa. Over time and a period of practice, this leads to Ajapa, which means spontaneous Japa, where the sadhak/practitioner is chanting mentally, without conscious effort. People have enjoyed tremendous benefits but chanting their own Guru Mantra, Gayatri Mantra, Lotus Sutra and many many others. One can also do japa on the name of god such as Krishna, Rama, Allah, Jesus, any form of the divine in whom the sadhak has faith or belief or feels attraction towards. Mantra is just a frequency or vibration or wave, floating through the cosmos. Riding this wave is the only way to discover it. Yes, mantras have literary and philosophical significance and meaning, which is more like a by product. If you focus on that, then you are loosing the essence of mantra and Japa as it is beyond words, beyond meaning, and though sound is its vehicle, beyond sound as well.

Mantras are also used for specific purposes. The ancient sages and rishis have discovered a countless number of such mantras in the Tantras, Vedas and other scriptures and texts. These each have a different purpose, role, vibration. Some may be used in rituals or ceremonies while others may complement or supplement other techniques, but mantra yoga itself is a deep science. Any one can discover this. All one has to do is chant.

There are innumerable benefits to mantra chanting or Japa.

Remember, the only way to discover it is to chant. There is no substitute for hard work.

WHO CAN CHANT
Any one who desires to explore this beautiful science can chant. But it is a great tool for others who are unable to take up or devote time to more intensive looking practices.

SHIVA MANAS PUJA (Mental Worship of Shiva)

SHIVA MANAS PUJA (Mental Worship of Shiva)

Shiva Manas Puja, written by Adi guru Shankaracharya is a very special hymn, which not only praises Shiva, but also depicts the true flavour of Shiva worship. Shiva needs devotion and not demonstration. In this stottram we offer to the great Lord various offering not in physical form but in mental form. We Start by offering bath, cloths, foods, devotion and finally offer ourselves to the Lord. The beauty lies in the fact that everything we offer, we offer in the portal of our mind and not physical. The compassionate Mahadev accepts all our offering and frees us from the consequences of our wrong doings, done knowingly or unknowingly.

O Shiva, you are my soul, Godess paarvati is my reason, my five senses (hearing, speaking ,touching, tasting and smelling) are Your attendants and my body is your home. All the pleasures of my senses are objects to your worship. My sleep is you meditation. Wherever I walk I am walking around You. Everything I say is your prayer and everything I do is in devotion to You.
